Den här boken handlar om den assyriska eldsjälen Yusuf Barkarmo och hans resa från byn Kfarboran i Turabdin (sydöstra Turkiet) till Sverige. Assyrierna emigrerade för första gången till Sverige 1967 och sedan dess har de blivit en av Sveriges större minoritetsbefolkningar. Deras historia har varit kantad av folkmord, tragedier och förtryck vilket lett till att majoriteten lämnat sina kärnområden för att idag bo i diasporan. Omkring 150 000 assyrier bor idag i Sverige.

Exakt hur deras resa såg ut och vilka upplevelser de gått igenom finns det inte mycket skrivet om. I denna bok får vi, genom Yusuf Barkarmo och hans familjs fotspår, följa den brokiga resan ända från det enkla och fattiga livet präglat av förtryck till möjligheternas och frihetens land Sverige. Yusuf var från det år han bosatte sig i Sverige aktiv inom assyriskt förenings- och organisationsliv. Han kom att inta ledande roller inom Assyriska demokratiska organisationen och Assyriska riksförbundet i Sverige, för vilket han var ordförande för fram till hans bortgång. Yusuf skrev även dikter och komponerade egna låtar. Ett genomgående tema i dessa texter och sånger var att de alltid handlade om kärleken och hemlängtan till Assyrien samt om vikten av att frigöra sig från förtryck.

Nemrod Barkarmo är civilingenjör inom logistik och arbetar till vardags som konsult. Nemrod är brorson till den framlidne Yusuf Barkarmo och detta är hans första bok som författare. Nemrod har tidigare varit aktiv inom assyriskt föreningsliv och Assyriska ungdomsförbundet.

Yusuf Barkarmo – in Service of the Assyrian People

The story follows the journey of Yusuf Barkarmo, an Assyrian rights fighter, from his childhood home in Kfarboran in the Turabdin region of southeast Turkey, to Sweden.

The first Assyrian immigrants arrived in Sweden in 1967 and have ever since been one of the largest minorities in Sweden. Their history is marked by genocide, tragedies and oppression which forced most Assyrians to flee their place of origin to come to Sweden.

Not much is written or documented about how their journey took place. This book follows the footsteps of Yusuf Barkarmo and his family, their motley journey from a simple life to Sweden, the land of freedom. Yusuf became active in Assyrian associations and organisations from the moment he arrived in Sweden, where he had leading position in the Assyrian Democratic Organization and the Assyrian National federation of Sweden, until his passing. He wrote his own poems and composed his own songs about love and a longing back to home, back to Assyria, and to be freed from oppression.

Nemrod Barkarmo has a background in civil engineering, in logistics, and works day to day as a consultant. Nemrod is the nephew of the late Yusuf Barkarmo and this is his first published book. Nemrod has previously been active in Assyrian organisations and the Assyrian youth federation of Sweden.
